A hundred years—a grand tale marked by the triumphs and trials of sustaining excellence throughout the journey.
Hitting the century mark is a testament to an organization's lasting impact and exceptional longevity. Centenary celebrations are not only a time to reflect on a rich legacy but also to appreciate the resilience, adaptability, and vision. Thriving for 100 years is about evolving with the times, overcoming challenges, and remaining relevant across generations.
This article explores the centennial celebrations of companies, technological advancements, and cultural phenomena around the world that have shaped the industries and the lifestyle.
Hindustan Times, one of India's most influential newspapers, celebrates a century of journalism in 2024. Established in 1924, the publication has been pivotal in shaping India’s media landscape and also ongoing. Founded in the pre-Independence era, the Hindustan Times played a crucial role in fostering nationalistic sentiments and providing a platform for the voices of the freedom fighters.
Hindustan Times has maintained a reputation for its dignified journalism becoming a household name across India. It has covered landmark events such as India’s independence in 1947, the first general elections in 1951, and the economic liberalization of the 1990s.
As the technology evolved, the newspaper adapted to the digital age. As it enters its centennial year, Hindustan Times stands as a testament to the power of the press in democracy.
The Winter Olympics, first held in Chamonix, France, is now 100 years old in 2024. The Games, originally referred to as the “international week of winter sports” were only designated as the Winter Olympics after one year.
The inaugural event featured 258 athletes from 16 nations, competing in 17 medal events. Among the winning moments are those of American, Charley Jewtraw, who thus became the first man to win a gold medal in the Winter Olympic Games in speed skating and ice hockey performance by Canadian Harry Watson that went down in history. The Winter Olympics have grown into a massive global event, now attracting nearly 3,000 athletes from over 90 countries. This year, Paris hosted the Olympic Games 2024.
The celebration, marking the 100th year of the games focusing on sports associated with mountains, is also about envisioning the next generation of sports.
French author Romain Rolland's book, Mahatma Gandhi: The Man Who Became One with the Universal Being, was first published in 1924. This significant work by Romain Rolland introduced the principles and ideals of the “Father of the Nation” to the Western world, portraying him not only as a great leader but also as a remarkable human being.
As this book turns 100 in 2024, it stands as a testament to Gandhi’s enduring legacy and the global recognition of his ideas on peace, civil disobedience, and human rights. Rolland’s portrayal helped bridge cultural divides and brought Gandhi’s message of non-violence to a foreign mass audience, contributing to his global prominence. The 2024 marks a centenary milestone for the book that serves as a reflection of Gandhi's ideals.
A century ago, from the historic Ripon Building in Chennai, India's first radio broadcast marked the beginning of a new era of communication. On June 16, 1923, this inaugural transmission by the Madras Presidency Radio Club pioneered a medium that would go on to connect millions of Indians, bringing stories, news, and voices into every home. This broadcast laid the foundation for All India Radio (AIR), which officially launched in 1936. By 2024, it has embarked on its second century, reaching a wider audience and bringing its message to life.
During the fight for independence, it served as a platform for revolutionary leaders like Mahatma Gandhi to reach the masses and later it became a crucial tool for education, information dissemination, and entertainment. From national addresses to cricket commentary, radio has connected generations, adapting to the digital age while preserving its legacy as the voice of India.
